What is DNA?

A human being is made up of millions of cells. Inside each of these cells is a small chemical called DNA.

DNA is like a thumbprint, it carries information about you. Nobody, not even your mum and dad will have the same DNA as you (unless you have an identical twin).

The long string of DNA is divided up into small portions that are called genes.

A gene is something that gives you a characteristic, such as the colour of your eyes, or different types of cells, such as heart of liver cell.

You inherit your genes from your mum and dad.
Each human being has 23 pair of chromosomes. One chromosome comes from your mum and the other comes from your dad.
